Black History Month
Black History Month UK is a celebration of black history that takes place 1-31 October every year. This year (2022), the 34th UK Black History Month will be celebrated. The first was in 1987.
In school each class will be joining in with Black History Month in different ways. Some of which they will share at home through projects and homework you will see in your Google classrooms.
To celebrate Black History month we are celebrating different individuals where possible linked to the class topic of what they are learning about. The children have been challenged to research them and present what they find to the class. We are also encouraging children to read books by black authors. At Saint Joseph's Infant and Junior Schools the culture and history of many world heritages and religions are incorporated throughout the year in all of our subjects.
It can be seen in the texts we use in literacy, the scientists we learn about in science, the historical figures, heroes and world leaders we learn about in history and geography as well as current figures in our society.
During art and design and design technology we learn about different world artists, techniques from art around the world as well as traditional artist styles from other countries.
It is important to learn and understand the religions of others, especially all those in our community and we reference important celebration days throughout the year as well as learn about the history and meaning behind these days.
As part of our British Values learning, PHSE and Caritas we also learn about tolerance for all, freedom and caring for all our neighbours as Jesus taught us. Incorporated throughout our RE we teach tolerance and understanding. The program teaches about two world religions Judaism and Hinduism in depth and touches upon other world religions throughout the year.
We believe in the importance of respect, love and freedom for all of our neighbours:

Its time for change this Black History Month
- By The Cut of Their Cloth coffee morning – Meet local artist and designer, Warren Reilly, who curated the online exhibition By The Cut of Their Cloth which tells the story of Brent’s multicultural history through the lenses of art photography and fashion. 5 October, 11am-12pm at Kilburn Library.
- Colour is Yours workshop – This fun and informative workshop celebrates the work of one of Britain’s leading black designers, Althea McNish, and her influence on the worlds of fashion and interior design. 12 October, 11am-12.30pm at Kilburn Library.
- Black Hair Workshop – Join Cosmetic Scientist and Trainee Trichologist Salem Wynter-Baxter for this hair care talk with natural hair care demo. 24 November, 6.30-7.30pm at The Library at Willesden Green.
- Style in my DNA – American swagger – Join author and fashion designer Lorna Holder for a talk on her book 'Style in My DNA' documenting 70 years of Caribbean influence on British fashion. 10 November, 6.30-7.30pm at The Library at Willesden Green.
- Remembering Britain's Black Servicemen and Servicewomen – Join author S.I. Martin for a look at the experiences and the legacies of Black men and women who served in Britain's armed forces. 11 November, 6.30-7.30pm, online.
- Bookstart under-five's story and rhyme time – These sessions celebrate the much-loved story Handa’s surprise, plus a fun craft activity. No need to book.

- Family Learning Festival: Black History Month craft workshop – A fun, simple, hands-on workshop from Brent Start. For parents/carers and children aged 5-11. Maximum of two children per adult. Wednesday 26 October, 2.30-4.45pm at Ealing Road Library. Reserve your place at the library.
- African necklaces and masks – Autumn craft fun for children aged 5- 11. Tuesday 25 October, 2.30-3.30pm at Kilburn Library.
